Wealth Advisor Insider Nathan Cherry: Do you have discretionary or non-discretionary accounts?

Nathan Cherry, Private Wealth Advisor

Surprisingly, most investors don’t know whether their accounts are discretionary or non-discretionary. But the difference is stark and could mean a lot for the individual investor.

Discretionary simply means that the advisor overseeing the accounts has the ability to trade inside the account without getting permission from the client.

The rules to this type of account require the advisor to be acting in the best interest of the client and not to exceed the agreed upon risk profile of the client. In other words, a client wanting to be moderate cannot suddenly have an aggressive account.

Non-discretionary means the adviser has to get the client’s permission before placing any trades in the account. This account works well for people who want to have a hands-on approach to their accounts.

If you don’t know what you have, you should ask. If you aren’t meeting regularly with your adviser, you should ask about that, too. If you want to talk more about it, call or email me. Contact Nathan at 910-692-9014.
