Moore County Schools Show Improvement in 2023-2024

Moore County Schools have shown notable improvements in their 2023-2024 performance grades, with one school achieving an A grade, eight schools earning B grades, and 17 schools meeting or exceeding growth expectations. The district's graduation rate is higher than the state average, and a majority of 10th graders are reading at or above grade level. Moore County School Board Work Session Summary

At its September 3 work session, the Moore County School Board reviewed a proposal to purchase 12 OPENGATE metal detection systems for middle and high school events, funded by expiring ESSER funds. The board also discussed a new Cooperative Innovative High School to support at-risk students, with plans to open in the 2025-26 school year. Traffic improvements around Aberdeen Elementary School were reviewed. Additionally, the board debated the appropriateness of the book "The Vietnam War" by Peter Benoit for school libraries, citing concerns about historical inaccuracies and biased content. Firefighters Rescue Trapped Driver in Southern Pines Crash

A serious vehicle accident occurred early Wednesday morning in Southern Pines when a truck crashed into a tree on West Massachusetts Avenue. One occupant was able to exit the vehicle unassisted, but firefighters had to work for 45 minutes to rescue the trapped driver. Both individuals were airlifted to a trauma center by UNC Carolina Air Care after being transported to a landing zone by ambulance. The response involved several local emergency services.
