Community Turns Out in Force for First Meeting on Proposed Continuous Flow Intersection

On July 16th, Pinehurst Elementary School was abuzz as hundreds of concerned Moore County residents attended the first of three public meetings hosted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to discuss the proposed Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) for the Pinehurst Traffic Circle.

The goal of the meeting was to provide the public with a comprehensive understanding of the CFI through large visuals and motion video representations displayed on large monitors.

Upon arrival, attendees were greeted by a line that snaked outside and around the building, highlighting the community's strong interest in the project. Once inside, residents could visit numerous stations manned by NCDOT representatives who explained the workings of the CFI and answered various questions.

Contrary to the expectations of some attendees, the meeting did not feature a formal presentation or speakers from either the community or NCDOT. There was no presentation of alternate ideas from NCDOT and no opportunity given to residents to offer their ideas. Instead, the format was designed to facilitate direct engagement between the public and the NCDOT representatives on the CFI only. Each attendee received a flyer explaining the proposed CFI, a public survey, and a comment sheet for anonymous submissions at check-in.

There was significant interaction, with residents eagerly seeking answers and providing feedback on the comment sheets. The atmosphere reflected the community's investment in understanding and influencing the proposed changes.

For those who could not attend the first meeting, there are two additional opportunities to participate. The second meeting is scheduled for Thursday in Carthage, and the third will take place next Tuesday in Aberdeen. See details below. Residents are encouraged to attend and voice their opinions on this important community issue.

  • Tuesday July 23, 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Aberdeen First Baptist Church, 700 N. Sandhills Boulevard, Aberdeen
