Moore County Road Improvements Discussed at SMPO Meeting

The Sandhills Metropolitan Planning Organization (SMPO) met Wednesday morning, June 19, to discuss the feasibility of various road projects in Moore County and outline their future plans. The meeting, held at the Assembly Hall in Pinehurst, included discussions on the development of a critical traffic model for Moore County, set to be completed by the end of the year. This model is essential for predicting future traffic patterns and identifying potential issues, with local municipalities eagerly awaiting its results.

Key topics included updates on railway projects, such as the N.C. DOT's $417 million upgrade to support new intercity passenger service from Raleigh to Southern Pines. The board also reviewed the DOT prioritization process, deciding to allocate 400 points to four high-priority projects, including infrastructure improvements to Roseland Road in Aberdeen.

Financial challenges were also addressed, with a $450 million deficit impacting future project funding. The board discussed the implications of sharing a larger division with Charlotte and the increase in DOT inflation rates from 1% to 5% in recent years. See details Sandhills Sentinel.

Skaters for Moore Hosts Fundraiser to Support New Skatepark

Skaters for Moore will host a fundraiser on Friday, June 21, from 5 – 9 pm at Memorial Park in Southern Pines. The event will feature local vendors, a pop-up skatepark, a live DJ, and a pizza party, with proceeds supporting the Memorial Park Skatepark project set to start this summer. Despite being short of their $400,000 goal, the group has enough funds to begin construction and continues to seek additional support through corporate sponsorships and a brick sales fundraiser.

Vehicle Crashes Into Dental Center on Southern Dunes Drive

Emergency responders were called to Southern Dunes Drive on Thursday afternoon after a pickup truck struck the Hometown Family Dental Center building. No injuries were reported. A County Building Inspector was summoned to assess structural damage. Responding units included Cypress Pointe Fire & Rescue, Moore County Sheriff's Office, and the NC State Highway Patrol.
