Summer 2024 Aberdeen Road Projects
Hwy 5: N.C. 5 is set for an upgrade, with plans to widen it from the U.S. 1 intersection in Aberdeen to the Trotter Road intersection (at the Exxon station, across from the ABC store) in Pinehurst. The road will be expanded to four lanes up to Sandpit Road and three lanes from Sandpit Road to Trotter Road, with pre-construction activities starting in August 2024.
US 1/US 15-502 “Super Street” Project: The "super street" project is set to commence on U.S. 1 and U.S. 15-501 in Southern Pines and Aberdeen, introducing reduced conflict intersections and U-turn bulbs to improve road safety and traffic flow. The project will span more than two years and involve extensive infrastructure modifications, including dry utility relocations set to begin in August.
NC 211 from Aberdeen to Raeford: N.C. 211 from Aberdeen to Raeford is slated for a substantial widening project that will upgrade it to a four-lane divided highway. The preparatory work is almost complete, with construction due to start in the fall. This multi-year project will cover a 16-mile route, aiming to improve traffic flow and safety.

The young man that tragically died in a car crash on Youngs Road early Tuesday morning has been identified as 19-year-old named Ryan Tracy, a student at Union Pines High School. The accident occurred when his car, a Honda Civic, sped on a curve, overturned, and hit a tree. Tracy, who was not wearing a seat belt during the rainy conditions, was thrown 30 feet from the vehicle. See details Sandhills Sentinel.

Moore County Schools Face Legal Challenge Over Book Removal
Moore County School District in North Carolina faces a federal Title IX complaint for removing books featuring gay parents from its elementary schools. This action aligns with a local "Parents' Bill of Rights" that mirrors a state law limiting discussions on gender identity and sexuality. Advocacy groups argue this policy discriminates against LGBTQ individuals, while supporters claim it respects local control over educational content. The complaint is part of wider national debates and legal challenges regarding educational policies and LGBTQ rights. See details NewsObserver.com.
