More on the Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program at Sandhills Community College

The Greenkeeper Apprenticeship Program(GAP) is part of a broader effort by the USGA to foster workforce development and support the golf industry in the Carolinas. The financial backing comes from a coalition including Ewing Outdoor Supply, the Dedman Foundation, Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, the Carolinas Golf Association, and private donors.

Now in its second year, the GAP offers flexible scheduling to accommodate working hours on the golf course and pairs each student with a mentor. The curriculum covers essential agronomic skills needed for effective turf maintenance, with graduates receiving college credentials, wage increases, and a journeyworker card from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The inaugural class saw 70% of its members receive job promotions, with many taking on greater leadership roles. Current and previous apprentices will also play a role in preparing for the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst, running from June 13-16. See complete article TurfNet.com.

Darius Rucker to Host World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony June 10

Darius Rucker is set to host the 2024 World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Pinehurst Resort on June 10, which will be aired live on the Golf Channel. This event coincides with the U.S. Open week and the debut of the World Golf Hall of Fame Museum. The ceremony will honor prominent golf figures and include an award presentation to NBA star Steph Curry for his efforts in promoting diversity in golf. See details WorldGolfHallofFame.org.
