LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Local Entrepreneur Carrie Cleary Turns Pinecones into Profit and Purpose
Amidst the towering pines of Pinehurst, there’s a story of resilience and creativity blooming right under our noses. Meet Carrie Cleary, the creative force behind Pinecone Fancy, a business that’s not just about crafting beautiful pinecone wreaths and decor, but also about finding purpose and giving back to the community.
Carrie’s journey with Pinecone Fancy began as a response to life’s unexpected twists. In 2019, a surgical accident altered the course of her life, leaving her in a wheelchair and without her accounting job. Determined to find a new path, Carrie discovered wheelchair tennis—a sport that not only rekindled her passion for competition but also provided a supportive community of fellow athletes.

However, the cost of traveling to tournaments posed a challenge for Carrie and her family. That’s when the idea of Pinecone Fancy took root. Drawing inspiration from her surroundings in Pinehurst, Carrie began crafting exquisite pinecone wreaths and decor, sourcing materials locally from Moore County.
“Living in Pinehurst gives me access to a plethora of beautiful pinecones,” Carrie explains. “My husband and I search Moore County for all the pinecones, pods, nuts, and natural things that adorn my home decor.”

But Pinecone Fancy is more than just a business—it’s a symbol of Carrie’s resilience and determination to thrive despite adversity. Through her creations, Carrie found solace and a new purpose, using the profits to fuel her passion for wheelchair tennis.
Beyond her entrepreneurial endeavors, Carrie remains deeply involved in her community. She regularly donates wreaths to local charities and volunteers her time to organize wheelchair tennis clinics through Pinehurst Parks & Rec, providing opportunities for others to experience the joy of adaptive sports.
Looking ahead, Carrie is excited about Pinecone Fancy’s future. She’ll be showcasing her creations at upcoming events like the Spring Market Open House at Twigg & Co. on March 16th and Spring Fest in Southern Pines on April 27th. Whether it’s through her charming pinecone creations or her passion for wheelchair tennis, Carrie’s story is a testament to the power of turning challenges into opportunities.
