New Substation Planned for Moore County in Response to Grid Attacks

Duke Energy is set to enhance its power grid security and reliability in Moore County by constructing a third power substation, following attacks on existing facilities in December 2022 that left 45,000 customers without electricity. This new substation aims to provide additional redundancy for rerouting power during emergencies. The attacks of 2022 highlighted the vulnerability of rural power infrastructure and prompted Duke Energy to adopt a proactive stance on grid security.

Duke Energy is currently navigating the rezoning process for the new substation's proposed site along U.S. 15/501, a residential area. The community is invited to discuss the project further at a public hearing scheduled for March 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the Carthage Townhall. See details MyFox8.com.
