Pinehurst-Southern Pines Makes Top 10 Micropolitan Area List

Micropolitan Statistical Areas, often referred to as MICROs, are unique geographic locales in the United States, nestled between the urban bustle of metropolitan cities and the tranquil expanse of rural areas. These areas are characterized by their modest population size, with a central city that houses at least 10,000 but fewer than 50,000 residents. Each Micropolitan area spans at least one county, providing a blend of small-town charm and the beginnings of urban infrastructure.

As of 2024, the United States boasts 543 Micropolitan Statistical Areas, as outlined in the OMB Bulletin 20-01. Micropolitan areas play a significant role in the national economy, fostering local businesses, and providing unique cultural and recreational opportunities while maintaining a close-knit community atmosphere.
