Citizens and Commissioners Discuss Future of Moore County’s Landscape
Moore County residents gathered at a special meeting with the Moore County Board of Commissioners Thursday night, January 19, to discuss updates to the county's Land Use Plan. (See the summary below.) The meeting, held at Pinecrest High School, saw citizens from various areas expressing concerns about rapid development and its effects. The focus was on preserving the rural character while managing growth. Issues like suburban expansion, traffic, water supply, and preserving natural resources were discussed. Suggestions included targeted development and affordable housing. The commissioners emphasized the importance of public input, and further forums are planned. The current land use plan is available for review on the county's website. Read details at Sandhills Sentinel.
Summary of the Moore County Land Use Plan
The 2013 Land Use Plan for Moore County, North Carolina, emphasizes the need for affordable housing options, particularly for the elderly, children, and the workforce. It addresses issues related to poverty, disability, and educational attainment. The role of historical and cultural resources in shaping the identity and pride of Moore County.
Availability of public lands for outdoor recreation and a strong educational system.
The plan sets forth goals, recommendations, and action steps for land use planning and development. These focus on:
Preserving heritage and supporting agriculture.
Conserving open space and natural resources.
Optimizing land use for the benefit of the community.
Additionally, the plan addresses transportation planning, affordable housing, and the preservation of historical and natural assets in new developments.
