Moore County’s Rash of Accidents: Drivers beware!
A recent surge in vehicle accidents across Moore County has prompted concern in our community. Here are 5 defensive driving skills you should review.
5 Essential Defensive Driving Skills
1. Maintain Situational Awareness: Constantly scan the environment for potential hazards, including other vehicles, pedestrians, and changing road conditions, and anticipate possible dangers.
2. Adhere to the 3-Second Rule: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, ideally a three-second gap, which should be increased in poor weather conditions or when driving larger vehicles.
3. Manage Blind Spots Effectively: Adjust mirrors to minimize blind spots and physically check over your shoulder before changing lanes. Also, be aware of other vehicles' blind spots, especially large trucks and buses.
4. Expect the Unexpected at Intersections: Approach intersections with caution, anticipating potential hazards like red-light runners, changing lights, and unexpected pedestrian or cyclist crossings.
5. Control Speed and Adapt to Conditions: Obey speed limits and adjust your speed according to road, traffic, and weather conditions, slowing down significantly in adverse conditions for safer maneuvering and longer reaction times.
