Hounds on the Grounds: Moore County's Prestigious Fox Hunting History

The Hounds on the Grounds event is coming up January 6 and is open to the public at the historic Weymouth House. The event is a local tradition but “Hounds on the Ground” goes beyond showcasing the skills of the hounds. It’s an event suitable for all ages with fun activities, displays, and chances to learn for the entire family. Guests can delve into the history of foxhunting, understand how the hounds are trained, and discover the conservation practices that are integral to the sport.

Fox hunting in Moore County has a rich history that began in 1914 with the establishment of the Moore County Hounds, the state's oldest recognized foxhound pack, by James Boyd and his brother, Jack. In 1974, the Walthour-Moss Foundation, created by Pappy and Ginny Moss, played a crucial role in sustaining mounted fox hunting in the area. This foundation manages a 4,000-acre preserve dedicated to riding and fox hunting, which has become the primary hunting ground in Moore County.

Enhancing Community Service: Southern Pines Adopts Advanced Asset Management

The Town of Southern Pines, is enhancing its approach to managing a variety of important town assets by partnering with OpenGov, a leader in specialized software for local governments. The software, Cartegraph Asset Management, will be instrumental in overseeing and maintaining different types of town assets. These include public infrastructure like roads and bridges, municipal facilities such as town halls and parks, essential equipment and vehicles used for maintenance, and valuable data about these assets.

By integrating advanced features like GIS for accurate mapping and mobile applications for fieldwork, this software promises to streamline operations, improve maintenance of town assets, and ultimately provide a better experience for residents. This technological advancement aligns Southern Pines with other public entities nationwide, adopting modern solutions for efficient and effective community service.
