Urgent Road Closure on Hwy 15/501 Between Murray Hill and Brucewood Roads
The Southern Pines Fire and Rescue Department implemented an emergency closure of a portion of Highway 15/501, between Murray Hill Road and Brucewood Road, following the detection of a gas leak. Causing major traffic issues, the closure went into effect around 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 13, as announced by the Town of Southern Pines. The source of the leak was identified as a two-inch pipe in the vicinity.

Fatal Crash in Carthage: Lexus and Tow Truck Collide on Highway 15-501
On Tuesday, a fatal head-on collision on U.S. Highway 15-50 near Vass-Carthage Rd overpass in Carthage claimed the life of 40-yearr-old Timothy Smith of Candor. The accident, involving a Lexus sedan and a flatbed tow truck, resulted in extensive vehicle damage and a wide debris field. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, while the tow truck driver was unharmed. Emergency responses included NCDOT, NC Highway Patrol, and Carthage Police Department, with speed being investigated as a possible cause.

Changes in NC Driver Licensing: Longer Wait for Teens Seeking Level 2 Licenses
New changes to North Carolina's Graduated Driver Licensing system will take effect on January 1, extending the period teen drivers must hold a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit from six to nine months before advancing to a Level 2 Limited Provisional License. This change comes after a temporary reduction of the requirement to six months during the COVID-19 pandemic. To qualify for a Level 2 license, teen drivers must be 16 or older, log 60 hours of driving, pass a road test, and show proof of insurance. See more details at Sandhills Sentinel.
