First Bank in Southern Pines Robbed, Suspect in Police Custody

A robbery occurred at the First Bank in downtown Southern Pines (the corner of Broad St. and E. New York Ave) at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. The Southern Pines Police Department quickly responded to the situation, resulting in the detention of a suspect associated with the bank robbery.

Town of Aberdeen: Monthly Water Billing Starting Feb 2024

Aberdeen is transitioning to a monthly water billing system starting February 2024, moving away from its bi-monthly billing cycle. The last bi-monthly bill will cover the period from October 15, 2023, to December 14, 2023, with the first monthly bill accounting for usage from December 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024. The town's adoption of Advanced Metering Infrastructure meters enables daily monitoring of water usage and alerts for high usage, aiding residents in managing their water consumption and preventing high bills.

Friends of Aberdeen Library

Turning Pages: Aberdeen's Journey from Historic Building to Modern Library

In Aberdeen, a significant community project is taking shape: the transformation of an old building into a new, much-needed library. Spearheaded by the Friends of Aberdeen Library (FOAL), this initiative is a response to the town's growth from a small community of 535 in 1907 to over 10,000 residents today.

The project began in 2014 when Mrs. Barbara Allred, an Aberdeen resident and library advocate, founded the Friends of Aberdeen Library. Their goal was simple but ambitious: to build a new library that could meet the demands of Aberdeen's growing population. The existing library, built in 1907 and just 950 square feet, was no longer sufficient, lacking space and facilities for children's programs, computer users, and community events.

After initial efforts to raise funds for a new building, the group faced the reality of the high costs involved. But in late 2022, te Town of Aberdeen offered the FOAL group an older building at 123 Exchange St. for renovation, along with a starting fund of $200,000.

Renovation Underway 2023 marked the start of the renovation process. The building's windows were repaired, keeping much of the original glass intact. The basement also saw significant improvements, preparing the building for further renovation. This initial phase, funded by both the town and the Friends group, was a crucial step forward.

Architect: John Heckethorn of Southern Pines

The Town Commissioners have approved a practical yet welcoming design for the library by architect John Heckethorn. The new space will include a community room, a technology area, and specific areas for children and teens. A deck at the back will provide a nice spot for visitors to relax and read.

Fundraising and Future Plans The project is moving forward, with construction drawings expected in early 2024 and renovations planned to start in late spring or early summer. The total cost is estimated to be between $850,000 and $900,000. While a significant amount of money has been raised, there's still a need for an additional $650,000 to $700,000. The Friends group is optimistic, thanks to ongoing support from residents across Moore County.

The building being renovated is right across from a lot the group originally bought for the new library. This lot will now be turned into a garden park, complete with walking paths, benches, and a fountain, offering a peaceful outdoor area for the community. Once it's finished, the Friends group plans to hand it over to the Town of Aberdeen.

History of the 123 Exchange St. Building

The historic building at 123 Exchange St. in Aberdeen was built around 1912, originally housing the Aberdeen Wholesale Grocery Company. Located beside the railroad tracks, this building was in a prime location for receiving grocery products by train. Goods were unloaded at the rear of the building then distributed to area grocery stores. The building itself is a robust structure, encompassing 4100 square feet with 17-inch thick brick walls and a 7 foot high basement. Until 2022, the building housed an Architectural Antiquities business.
