Tragic Collision Near Robbins Claims Two Lives

On Thursday, November 2, a head-on collision between a Chevy Cruze and a semi-truck on Highway 24/27 near Robbins resulted in the deaths of the two occupants of the Cruze, identified as Matthew McLennan and Nancy Williams. The incident, which took place near McDuffie Road, also involved a Dodge RAM. The cause for the Cruze's sudden lane change remains under investigation. The highway was closed for several hours for cleanup and examination, but the RAM and semi-truck drivers were uninjured.

Fatal Car Accident in Southern Pines Shakes Community

A motorist met a tragic end on Friday when his vehicle overturned on NE Service Road in Southern Pines. The lone-car accident took place around 7 p.m., along the stretch between Midland and Pennsylvania roads, adjacent to U.S. Highway 1.

Taylortown Shooting Suspect Apprehended

A shooting in Taylortown occurred near Walker Street on Juniper Lake Road last Sunday evening, October 29. The unidentified victim, shot twice, self-transported to Moore Regional Hospital and has been discharged. The suspect, Derrikes McRae, 48, from West End, was arrested on Thursday, November 2, on multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder. He remains in Moore County Detention Center without bond, awaiting trial.

Carthage Board Explores Short-Term Rental Zones

The Carthage Planning Board recently discussed regulations for short-term rentals, considering extending permissions to the central business district. While this expansion was approved, other decisions, like property owner proximity, were deferred for further review. Additionally, the benefits of multi-modal transportation, such as interconnected trails and paths, were highlighted.

Aberdeen House Severely Damaged by Fire

A house on Linden Road in Aberdeen was significantly damaged by a fire on Friday evening, November 3rd. Firefighters from multiple departments responded quickly, preventing the flames from spreading to nearby vehicles and woods. The homeowner was not present during the blaze, and the cause is still under investigation. Linden Road was temporarily closed for emergency vehicles.

House Fire in Cameron Linked to Improper Ash Disposal

A house on Marks Road in Cameron was engulfed in flames early Sunday morning, November 5th, after the improper disposal of ashes from a wood heater ignited the ground and a nearby pine tree. The resident sustained a minor burn but declined treatment.

Local High School Football Teams Advance

Both Pinecrest and North Moore football teams advance to the second round of the NCHSAA state playoffs following wins at home Friday night.
