Lakeside Drive House Faced Halloween Fire Scare

On Halloween evening, a residence on Lakeside Drive, in close proximity to Foxfire, narrowly escaped a devastating blaze. Emergency services were alerted shortly after 8 p.m. when a resident reported flames emanating from the side of their fireplace. Upon arrival, firefighting units were met with a dense haze inside the home. While the primary fire at the fireplace was promptly subdued, thick smoke billowed from the attic. On further investigation, firefighters discovered minor flames close to the chimney within the attic. The team swiftly intervened, cutting through the roof for better access, and extinguished the lingering fire.

Although the flames were controlled without any injuries, the house endured significant smoke and water-related damages. As of now, investigative teams are probing into the origins and cause of the fire. Firefighting units from across the county converged on the scene to assist.

Pinecrest Secures Sixth N.C. Girls Golf Title at Pinehurst

Pinecrest has now matched the record for the most N.C. High School Athletic Association girls golf championships after securing a 10-shot victory in this year's 4A tournament held at Pinehurst No. 6.

The Patriots clinched back-to-back championships, marking their third win in the past five years. After establishing a five-stroke lead on the first day with a team score of 3-over 219, the Patriots recorded a 14-over on the second day, culminating in a total of 449 strokes to fend off their competitors.

With this win, Pinecrest has a total of six titles, a record they now share with Salisbury. Their championship victories span years 1987, 2001, 2016, 2019, and 2022. Additionally, the team's performance was highlighted by placing three of their golfers among the top 12 and four within the top 17, further cementing their state title.

Small Business Saturday: Why Your Local Shop Deserves Your Dollars on Nov. 25th

On the heels of Black Friday, one of the most frenzied shopping days of the year, comes an event with a much quieter, but equally powerful, impact: Small Business Saturday, set for November 25th this year. Though it may not command the same nationwide attention, the essence of Small Business Saturday is crucial for communities and local economies across the country. Here's why this day holds such immense significance:

Boosting the Local Economy - Every dollar spent at a local business recirculates within the community at a much higher rate than money spent at a chain store. Local business owners often use local services, products, and professionals, multiplying the value of any money spent in their establishment.

Personalized Service - Local businesses thrive on understanding their community's needs. Shopping at local stores often means receiving personalized service from individuals who know their products inside out and can offer recommendations tailored to individual preferences.

Keeping Communities Unique - Local businesses add flavor to our communities, bringing in a touch of individuality. These businesses, often built from the ground up by passionate individuals, offer unique products and experiences that chains can't replicate. This diversity enhances local culture and keeps our neighborhoods distinctive.

Jobs - Small businesses are one of the largest employers in many communities. By supporting them, you're ensuring job creation and stability in your own backyard. These jobs often offer more flexibility and personal growth than those in larger corporations.

Strengthening Community Ties - Local businesses frequently give back to their communities, sponsoring local sports teams, participating in community events, and supporting local charities. Their presence helps to foster a sense of community and interconnectedness.

By choosing to shop locally on November 25th (and beyond), you're not just making a purchase; you're making a statement. You're saying that local economies matter, that individuality is cherished, and that community ties are to be nurtured. This year, let's make an effort to step into our local stores, meet our neighbors, and invest in the heartbeat of our communities.

Aberdeen to Introduce Monthly Water Billing in 2024

Starting February 2024, Aberdeen residents will receive water bills on a monthly basis. The last bi-monthly bill will be issued in January 2024, covering the usage from October 15, 2023, to December 14, 2023. The inaugural monthly bill for February will account for the usage from December 15, 2023, to January 15, 2024.

Thanks to the new AMR meters, customers can now monitor their daily water consumption. This feature also enables alerts for unusual spikes in usage, assisting residents in avoiding unexpectedly high water bills.
