Early Voting for November Municipal Elections in NC Starts Tomorrow!
Early in-person voting for the November municipal elections in North Carolina starts on Oct. 19 and concludes on Nov. 4. Moore County residents can vote at the Moore County Agricultural Center in Carthage. However, Cameron, Robbins, and Foxfire Village are excluded from early voting. To check voting eligibility for 2023, residents can visit NCSBE.gov. All voters are required to present a photo ID. While most will use a driver's license, other forms of ID are also accepted. Those without suitable IDs can obtain one for free from their county board of elections until Nov. 4 or vote provisionally by filling out an ID Exception Form. More details on the ID requirements are available at NCSBE.gov/voterID.
Southern Pines Native, Patrick Dougherty, Among Honorees for Prestigious North Carolina Award
On Thursday, Nov. 9, the esteemed North Carolina Award will be presented to six notable individuals, including the internationally acclaimed sculptor, Patrick Dougherty. A local from Southern Pines, Dougherty has made significant contributions to the fine arts. The ceremony, taking place at the North Carolina Museum of Art, will be officiated by Governor Roy Cooper. Established in 1961, this award has recognized over 250 individuals for their outstanding achievements in various fields. Dougherty, with his unique sculptures and numerous accolades, stands as a testament to the talent emerging from North Carolina.

Jennifer White of Candor named “Trailblazer 2023” by Business North Carolina
Jennifer White, a 36-year-old native of Candor and the dynamic President of Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway, has been honored as a "Trailblazer 2023" by Business North Carolina magazine. Growing up in Pinehurst, she was immersed in the world of railways, a legacy started by her father, Robert Menzies, in 1987. After a stint in Charlotte's real estate, Jennifer dedicated a decade to the family railway, known for its freight connections and special holiday rides. Educated at UNC Charlotte and influenced by her blended family's values, Jennifer balances her professional achievements with a vibrant family life, including her soon-to-retire Marine husband and five children. Under her leadership, the railway recently acquired a 104-mile track, hinting at a revival of Pinehurst's historic luxury train tourism. Congratulations Jennifer!
