Highfalls Dam Removal in Northern Moore County Sparks Concerns

In a recent meeting in Robbins, Northern Moore County residents expressed apprehensions about the proposed dismantling of the Highfalls dam. The gathering saw representatives from organizations like Unique Places to Save, American Rivers, and Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) present their rationale for the dam's removal. They highlighted the dam's past damages and the ecological advantages of a dam-free Deep River.

However, the community attendees raised several concerns. They emphasized the dam's historical value and potential environmental repercussions. Questions about the future of the recreational area post-removal were also prevalent, with many drawing parallels to the Carbonton dam area, which faced challenges like vandalism after its dam was taken out.

RES, the current property owner, has plans to donate the land for public recreational use after the dam's removal. If this doesn't come to fruition, the land will be designated for conservation, restricting public access.

Background: High Falls is a notable community in Moore County, North Carolina, known for its 15-foot waterfall and historical mills. The High Falls Dam, with its roots in the late 19th century, underwent modifications in the 1920s to facilitate hydroelectricity production. A 2018 proposal to remove the dam for environmental reasons was met with resistance from locals and was subsequently paused.

Expecting Father and Ex-Union Pines Athlete, Ryan Yarter, Dies in Accident

Ryan Yarter, a 19-year-old soldier from Carthage and former multi-sport athlete at Union Pines High School, tragically lost his life in a vehicle accident at Fort Liberty on Sunday. Assigned to the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, Yarter was on his way home from work when the incident occurred. He was also looking forward to becoming a father.

Moore County Sheriff Warns Residents of Scam Calls

Sheriff Ronnie Fields of Moore County cautions residents about recent scams reported to the Sheriff’s Office. In these scams, individuals are falsely told they're speaking to a law enforcement officer on the phone who demands payment to prevent arrest. Some residents have reported this scam in connection with a claim that they have failed to report for jury duty. It's essential to understand that law enforcement will never ask for money to avoid arrest. If you're uncertain or concerned, disconnect the call and reach out to the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-2931 for clarification.
