Household Hazardous Waste Collection & Shred Event
Pinecrest High School is set to host the 15th Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection & Shred Event on Saturday, November 18th. This is a free event that aims to provide the community with a safe and convenient platform to dispose of specific hazardous household items and shred sensitive documents.
What to Bring and What Not to Bring - Residents can bring items such as paint & paint thinners, furniture strippers, solvents, wood preservatives, aerosols, fluorescent light tubes, compact fluorescent bulbs, various batteries, propane cylinders, swimming pool chemicals, used motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, hydraulic transmission fluid, and brake fluid. However, it's essential to note that the maximum container size for liquids is 5 gallons.
Pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides will also be accepted, but they must be in their original containers for identification purposes.
For those looking to dispose of documents, a paper shredding area will be available in an adjacent parking lot, with a limit of 8 bags per person. Additionally, a medication drop area will be set up to accept both prescription and over-the-counter medications, provided they are in their original containers.
Not Accepted at This Event: Injectables, sharps, or any commercial or electronic waste.
If you only have paint to dispose of, Moore County offers a permanent facility for paint disposal every Saturday at 364 Eagle Springs Rd.
It's crucial to understand the significance of properly disposing of hazardous household items. Incorrect disposal can lead to environmental pollution, harm aquatic life, and even pose health risks to humans. By participating in events like these, residents play a vital role in protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of the community.
Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to declutter responsibly! This is a free event for Moore County residents.
North Moore High Dedicates English Wing to Esteemed Educator Iris W. Burns
North Moore High School dedicated its English Wing to former teacher Iris W. Burns in a ceremony attended by her family and a large gathering. Burns, an alumna of Elise High School and High Point College, inspired a legacy of teaching within her family, with two daughters and two granddaughters becoming educators. She taught at various schools, including Elise and North Moore, until her retirement in 1988. Post-retirement, she volunteered at Elise Middle School and tutored at Westmoore Elementary. The Moore County Board of Education chair, Robert Levy, commended Burns for her contributions during the dedication event.
Southern Pines Public Library Closed Thursday, Oct. 19
The library will be closed Thursday for staff development. It will reopen Friday October 20 with regular hours.
