Carolina Shag: Still Going Strong with the Moore Area Shag Society

Today’s “business” spotlight highlights one of our social clubs in Moore County rather than a business. You can’t live in North Carolina for too long without hearing about a dance called the “Shag” or “Carolina Shag.” If you grew up in North Carolina, there’s a very strong chance you know exactly what it is. In fact, the Shag is the official popular dance of North Carolina (with Clogging being the official folk dance).

Originating in the 1940’s and 50’s along the coastal regions of North and South Carolina, the Shag is a smoothed out adaptation of the swing dances of that era like the Jitterbug and the Bop. It’s distinct style is characterized by smooth, flowing movements and a laid-back, rhythmic feel and is danced to “Beach” music (not to be confused with California Beach Boys type of music please). Beach music has a timeless quality and is deeply rooted in Rhythm and Blues.

Carolina Shag continues to attract new generations of music lovers and dancers of all ages. Its feel-good nature and danceable rhythms make it a staple at social gatherings in the area.

At the end of the day, Carolina Shag is a cultural thing that is best experienced through music, dancing and friendships fostered through clubs like the Moore Area Shag Society (MASS).

Each month, MASS members gather, dance, and socialize to the beach tunes of guest DJs and beach bands a few times during the year. MASS invites you to join them on October 7th from 7-10pm for their monthly social at Down Memory Lane (161 Dawkins St, Aberdeen). The entry fee is just $10.

Next month on Nov.4th, MASS will host one of the best beach bands around, Gary Lowder & Smokin’ Hot! Ticket information for this event can be found at www.MASSEventTickets.com
