Moore County Early Voting Begins Oct.19

Elections will be here before you know it. Moore County early voting begins October 19. You will be asked for a photo id to vote. If you don’t have a photo id, the Moore County Board of elections can provide you with one if you come to their office. Refer to the Moore County municipal voting rules for all the details. Please note that the Town of Cameron, the Town of Robbins, and Foxfire Village do not participate in early or absentee voting. The last day to early vote is Saturday, November 4, from 8am to 3pm. Otherwise, see you on election day!

Have you heard about the “Rock the Village” project?

It's a super cool collaboration between Pinehurst Business Partners, the Village of Pinehurst, and the local Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Just in time for the 2024 U.S. Open, local artists are turning rocking chairs into jaw-dropping art pieces, capturing the essence of Pinehurst and golf. These aren't just any chairs, though. They're handcrafted by the renowned Troutman Chair Company, known for their century-long legacy of craftsmanship. Imagine wandering through Pinehurst Village and stumbling upon these unique chairs, each telling its own story of the area's charm and history.

The grand reveal is set for May 2024, and throughout the summer, visitors and residents can immerse themselves in this artistic spectacle. Plus, it's all for a good cause! The project supports First Tee - Sandhills, empowering young folks through golf.

If you're feeling generous or artsy, they're looking for sponsors and artists. You can check out some sample chairs at the Welcome Center on Cherokee Road or dive deeper on their website, rockthevillage.com. Sounds like a fantastic way to celebrate Pinehurst's rich culture, don't you think?

Moore County in top 10 for Deer Collisions

Between 2020 and 2022, the ten leading counties in the state reported a total of 16,049 animal-related accidents. These incidents resulted in an approximate damage of $51 million, 743 injuries, and five fatalities. During that 3 year period, Moore County ranked 7th, reporting 1161 animal crashes and 43 injuries.

You don’t have to live here very long to understand that there is a heavy deer population and that slamming on brakes is a common practice to avoid hitting adult deer and their young. Fall is a very active time of year for deer, so please be cautious.

Deer collisions peak in the fall due to a combination of factors:

  • Breeding Season: The fall "rut" sees male deer actively seeking mates, making them more likely to cross roads without caution.

  • Seasonal Migration: Deer move to new habitats in the fall, increasing road crossings.

  • Diminished Daylight: Shorter fall days mean more driving occurs during the active dawn and dusk hours for deer, reducing visibility.

  • Harvest Displacement: As crops are collected, deer search for new food sources, often crossing roads.

  • Inexperienced Young: Spring-born fawns, now young deer, lack road awareness.

  • Human Activities: Fall outdoor activities can startle deer, pushing them onto roads.

To minimize risks, drivers should be vigilant during twilight hours, use high beams when safe, and anticipate multiple deer after spotting one.
