May Street Bicycles Fosters Connections on Two Wheels and Six Strings

In the heart of Southern Pines there’s a unique business that blends passion for bicycles with a deep commitment to veterans. May Street Bicycles, nestled at 1110 N May St, is more than just a bike shop; it's a hub of community and support, thanks to its owner, Greg Combs.
A retired military veteran and former college professor, Greg turned his love for bicycling into a full-time pursuit by opening May Street Bicycles after retiring from teaching. But it's not just about selling and servicing bikes; Greg's mission extends far beyond that.
Greg's life took a dramatic turn when he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a cycling accident shortly after retiring. This experience profoundly impacted his outlook and spurred him to give back to others facing similar challenges. Leveraging his hobby of guitar playing, Greg discovered "Guitars 4 Vets" (G4V), a program aiding veterans with TBI and PTSD by offering guitar lessons as a therapeutic tool.

Realizing the absence of a local G4V chapter, Greg took the initiative to start one right out of his bicycle shop. The Southern Pines G4V chapter, affectionately known as SoPi G4V, has grown remarkably. Celebrating its first anniversary, the chapter boasts 12 volunteer instructors, 61 students, and 22 graduates who've found solace and joy in strumming chords and learning melodies.
Greg's dedication to community service doesn't end with music. During the winter months, he offers free bicycle repair lessons, primarily to home-schooled students, nurturing the next generation of cycling enthusiasts.

The essence of May Street Bicycles is that it’s a place where camaraderie is built, skills are shared, and lives are changed, one bike—and one guitar chord—at a time.
Greg invites the community to join the G4V monthly jam sessions, held every second Friday at Hatchet Brewery in Southern Pines from 5 PM to 8 PM, where music and friendship flow as freely as the craft beer.
